WASHINGTON — More than a year after Congress passed the economic stimulus package, President Barack Obama announced that $795 million of that money will go toward expanding Internet access across the country to provide jobs and improve communication.

Obama's plan, announced Friday, will allocate more than $1 billion for installing broadband Internet across the country.

There were two important high speed rail reports released this week in California. One of them, by CALPIRG, showed how HSR is a clear success around the world, having no trouble meeting its ridership goals and improving transportation. The other, by the Berkeley Institute for Transportation Studies, questioned some of the assumptions of the HSR ridership study.

Rochester is one step closer to beginning development of a new high-speed rail-ready intermodal train station, according to Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-Fairport.

Slaughter said in a statement Thursday that $2.5 million has passed a key benchmark in Congress and is being directed to the city of Rochester to begin planning and design an intermodal station.
