Not Enough Time For Democracy?

I sought to run for the New York State Assembly in order to serve the public interest.

I will continue my civic activism, but not as a candidate for the Assembly in 2010.

In order to run in the primary in my party for my district, we needed to gather 500 signatures on petitions, under very tight and narrow and arcane rules, which are designed to discourage activist candidacies.

I am physically disabled, most of my feet are amputated and it is really impossible for me to walk door-to-door to collect signatures, thus, we had to rely on others for this, and to rely on those persons understanding the arcane rules. Not being physically able presents a challenge to people such as myself and Chris Hilderbrant of the Center for Disability Rights when he campaigned for office. If I was able, I would have collected all 500 signatures by myself, no problem.

My helpers nonetheless got many more valid petition signatures than the county Board of Elections acknowledged, but the brief time frame was simply too daunting at each stage of the process to prevail in my quest to get on the primary ballot.

I wish each of the three candidates well in the primary election.
